Unknown factors behind gum diseases

Gum disease is one of the most common ailments found in the planet and yet most people don’t take enough precautions against the onset of a gum disease. Gum disease usually starts with a minor issue like a gum pain and then balloons into something serious since most of us ignore the symptoms or factors that denote the presence of gum disease.

Here in this article, let us talk about some of the factors that increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis and help you understand better about the causes of gum disease and refer a doctor immediately when the signs become clear.

1) Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes during puberty or pregnancy greatly increases the chances of a gum disease resulting in the gums becoming extra sensitive. It is essential that you take good care of your teeth and gums to offset the risk of gum ailment during the time period when your body is undergoing rapid changes.

2) Smoking

Smoking or drinking definitely increases the risk of you suffering damage during a gum disease. It becomes harder for the gum tissue to repair itself for people who smoke regularly.

3) Genetics

One factor that is ignored when it comes to dental issue is genes. People with a family history of gum ailments have a greater chance of contracting one themselves.

4) Perennial illness

Diseases like HIV, Cancer or other lifelong diseases mess up the immune system and makes it harder for the body to defend itself. People suffering from perennial illness also have a greater chance of contracting gingivitis or periodontitis.

5) Age

Old age not only increases the risk of contracting a dental ailment, but also weakens the gum and the tissues around it.

6) Stress

In an age where there is a high amount of stress in our daily routines, who would have thought it would play a big role in conditions as myriad as hypertension, cancer to periodontal diseases.

7) Nutrition

Not eating healthy definitely reduces the capability of your body to stave off the infections, be it dental or any other infection in other parts of your body.

8) Bad habits

Bad habits like clenching or grinding your teeth would play a major role in teeth deformation and restricting your body’s natural defences to counteract the oral infection.
