The machine works by creating a patient-specific, extremely accurate digital image of a dental surface that is then stored as a computer file. The scan is translated into 3D digital representation using specialized software.

First, a method called slicing is done where the original 3D image is split into thin horizontal layers.

Such layers are passed to 3D printers. The physical model will then be printed layer by layer before completion of the actual 3D model.

The complete digital image is sent to a milling machine. The milling machine starts with a solid piece of material instead of printing a model layer by layer. The milling machine will carve the new 3D physical model out of that block of material.
