Being pregnant comes with many responsibilities—and the way you care for your teeth is no exception. For most women, routine dental visits are safe during pregnancy, but let your dental office know what month you are in when you make your appointment. It’s important for you to take good care of your teeth and gums while pregnant. Pregnancy causes hormonal changes that increase the risk of developing gum disease which, in turn, can affect the health of your developing baby

Good dental hygiene is even more important during pregnancy. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make your gums more easily irritated and inflamed. If you develop red, puffy or tender gums that bleed when you brush, you may be experiencing an exaggerated response to plaque that builds up on your teeth. To avoid plaque build-up, thoroughly clean your teeth and gums twice a day. Brush in the morning after breakfast and last thing at night before going to sleep and floss once a day.

The best way to keep gum ailments at bay during pregnancy is by practicing good oral hygiene.

  • Brush thoroughly and gently at least twice a day
  • Use a soft bristled branded toothbrush and toothpaste rich in fluoride
  • Floss regularly
  • Go for regular dental checkups. Your dentist will remove plaque and tartar that is not removed by mere brushing
  • Eat a lot of citrus fruits and fruits rich in iron as they keep your gums and teeth healthy

Here are additional tips to keep in mind throughout your pregnancy:

  • If you experience morning sickness, rinse your mouth as soon as possible. Also, if your toothpaste is causing you to feel nauseous, switch toothpaste brands or change to a mild flavour.
  • Be sure to brush your front teeth and your back teeth very well during pregnancy. Make it a point to brush the gumline to prevent pregnancy gingivitis from occurring and also the teeth and biting surfaces to prevent dental caries (decay).
  • If you have a midnight snack, brush your teeth again to reduce the chance of cavities.
  • In addition to flossing and brushing, be sure to rinse with a fluoride mouthwash.
  • Regular flossing, teeth cleansing with medicated fluoride toothpaste prevents many diseases and oral infections
  • Keep your teeth fresh and unhurt by following a thorough mouth rinsing on regular basis
  • For preventing tooth decaying, eat fresh cheese, which provides lot of calcium. You will get alkaline as well to strengthen up your teeth and manage acidic impact on the teeth
  • Drink water frequently to refresh the mouth. Due to recurrent vomiting, mouth and teeth are stuffed with heavy layers of acid to dampen the quality of teeth. Water cleans 99 percent debris and acidic components from the mouth
  • Make your teeth stronger. Avoid sugary snacks. Sweet cravings are common during pregnancy. However, keep in mind that the more frequently you snack, the greater the chance of developing tooth decay.  If you like to consume sugar-based food during pregnancy, try to steer clear of high carb sweeteners and confectionery to protect enamels of your teeth
